Beyond Words: Strategies for Leveling Up Your Tech Writing Career¶
Description
Leveling up your tech writing career can be difficult. You can get plenty of work done, but talking about it and presenting it in a meaningful manner can be challenging. You can do everything possible to stay on schedule, but the folks you work with don’t always operate on the same time table. You can have a great quarter and deliver a bunch of impactful projects, but struggle to replicate that success in the next quarter. And the one after that.
I’d like to share some of the solutions I’ve found to these problems.
My name is Calvin Fung and I have seven years of technical writing experience. I have written standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the manufacturing industry and user guides and API documentation for software developers. I currently lead a team of writers in managing one of the largest doc sets in cloud computing at AWS.
In this talk, you’ll learn about some of the practical steps I’ve taken to answer questions like these:
- How do I determine what to work on next?
- How do I figure out what to learn to continuously expand my skill set?
- How do I promote my work so it gets recognized?
- How do I collaborate with people from other teams and turn them into my biggest fans?
- How do I communicate the right details to my leadership team without drowning them in information?
This is not a theoretical talk - I will show you the artifacts that I actually use day-to-day. While there are many ways to do this, I’m sharing with you what’s worked for me and what I like to share with other writers. They’ve found it useful and I hope you do too.
